Logs on the Road 61, 62, 63, 64, 65 from Virtual Quilter

The first design is neat and tidy, but it might work on a tiled floor but not quite right for a bed.

Turn eight blocks around and it becomes a big star.

Back to the first design, but with four blocks moved out towards the corners.

Now they are all the way to the corners.

The final design for today has the four dark blocks from the centre moved towards the corners, and it is my favourite for the day.

That is all for this week’s mid week collection of Log Cabin designs, but there will be more next ...

Logs Around the Yard 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 from Virtual Quilter

Filled a bin with green waste yesterday, but the back yard still looks lovely and green. Unfortunately most of the green is still weeds.

These blocks would be a bit more fiddly to make than the usual Log Cabin blocks, but the fabrics could be cut into strips and joined together and then cut into narrow strips to fir the blocks.

I think I should add more colours to the designs … one day when I have nothing to do and expect no interruptions! It probably wouldn’t work as when I don’t expect interruptions I get lots.

If we ...

Purple Logs 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 from Virtual Quilter

Interesting design, pretty colours.

Are those crowns in the corners in the design above? Or birds without heads?

Another interesting one.

The one above is a slight alteration of the one above it! Less interesting, but I like it more.

The last design for this week’s mid week retreat (or coffee break) looks like an exploding star. It would be interesting to make with fading blocks around the centre star.

That is all for this week, but there will be another mid week Log Cabin retreat next week.

Log Heap 71, 72, 73,74, 75 from Virtual Quilter

Another mid week retreat has arrived … I am sure the weeks are getting shorter!

The first two designs are very different, but I like them both.

The middle changed in the one above. Makes a big difference to the overall

The one above looks like a block design as well as a quilt design.

Interesting design to finish this weeks mid week retreat, or coffee break.

More Log Cabin designs mid week, next week.

Logs in an Outback Garden 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 from Virtual Quilter

Introducing a project file with several variations of Log Cabin blocks along with a mixed bag of applique designs based on some of Australia’s native flora. It has taken about a month to sort out colours for the background Log Cabin blocks, but the colour of the flowers was easier as many of the varieties of flora native to this country might have different colour flowers, and most of them have red included in the family.

Some of the pieced backgrounds designs would look OK without the applique added, like the one above and below, but others, like the ...

Fishing Cabin 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 from Virtual Quilter

The plan for this evening’s meal is fish, so I had a play with some pieces of fish!

I love watching schools of fish swimming in all directions, and never seeming to run into each other.

I see these as tablecloths rather than quilts to go on beds … not too many of us would like fish laying on the bed for a day, let alone months or even years.

A single fish would be great on a placemat, and they would be ok on coasters too.

Must remember to get the fish out of the freezer about lunch time ...

Logs on the Pile 91, 92, 93, 94, 95 from Virtual Quilter

This project file has been in hiding for a few years, but there are still some interesting designs waiting to get their moment in the spotlight. The one above is interesting.

Love the second design.

Spaces in the one above for quilting to be shown off.

Another interesting design above. It would make an interesting mystery quilt as there are several ways to arrange the blocks, and I think I might have to have a bit of a play later today to see what else I could do with the blocks.

The last design for today is very interesting too ...

Cornerstone Logs + Juicy Citrus 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 from Virtual Quilter

Interesting.

The first design was very similar to the average Cornerstones quilt, but the second is very different!

I like the one above.

I like the one above too…. going to be hard to pick a favourite this week!

I think I can call the last Log Cabin variation a modern design.

That is all for this week’s Log Cabin retreat for quilters who like Log Cabin quilt designs.

More next week, mid week.

Bundaleer Logs 66, 67, 68, 69, 70 from Virtual Quilter

Looks like the square in the centre is doing a somersault!

I love the design above, but if I ever make it I would fill in the corners a little bit.

The third design for today made me think of the pair of pipelines which pass not too far from the Bundaleer Reservoir which shares a name with the forest I was thinking of when I named this project file.

I was having fun when I was playing with the designs in this project file, and the design above is the result of one of the most enjoyable moments.

Logs in the Garden 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 from Virtual Quilter

The first design could be made as just a Log Cabin quilt, but with a lot of washed out colours in the light part of the Courthouse Steps blocks and a lot of all light blocks it makes a great background for some applique.

The second design would work with plain background applique blocks surrounded by all dark Log Cabin blocks.

I love the design above … most of the Log blocks are Courthouse Steps, with four Curved Logs in the corners.

Looks like a secret garden hidden behind some shrubs.

In the last one the garden is not so hidden ...

Logs on Point in Purple 66, 67, 68, 69, 70 from Virtual Quilter

Interesting. Looks like four crowns around the outside!

Now there are very wide Ws around the edge.

How to turn W into a V!

Now I have and 8 laying across teh design.

Something different, though all of today’s designs are a bit different!

They’re a weird mob today, but interesting to see what happens when I play with a simple collection of Log Cabin Blocks.

More Log Cabin quilt designs mid week, next week.

Beetaloo Logs 31, 32, 33, 34, 35 from Virtual Quilter

Make lots of identical Log Cabin blocks and arrange them as desired!

Then turn them all 180 degrees to turn the design inside out. Makes quite a difference!

Make a few modifications to the first design.

Looks totally different!

In the final design the blocks as laid out in the design above were turned 90 degrees.

Any collection of identical Log Cabin blocks can be arranged in dozens of different ways in 4 x 4, 6 x 6, 8 x 8, 10 x 10 or 12 x 12. A row or two removed from each side of the layouts creates ...

Log Heap 66, 67, 68, 69, 70 from Virtual Quilter

Not the prettiest colours but they serve the purpose of showing the designs clearly.

Any basic Log Cabin block instructions to make the blocks. I have used four strips on each side of the centre square which is cut the same width as the surrounding strips. If the strips are cut 1.5 inches wide the blocks will finish at 9 inches finished, 2 inch wide strips finish as a 12 inch block.

If you make a pile of Log Cabin blocks, play with them by laying them out on a bed or the floor or pin them to a ...
